Teaching Elementary Science

Elementary science should be taught in a fun and engaging way!! I remember when I was in elementary school, some of my teachers showed episodes or movies of  the Magic School Bus as a resource to teach certain science lessons.  I thought they were very interesting and informative and would still be a useful tool in today's classroom.  My teachers just used tapes that were played in a VCR when I was in school.  But now, teachers can use additional online resources that allow students to visit and explore with Ms. Frizzle and her class. Scholastic. com has a webpage that brings Ms. Frizzles class even more to life.  So after showing an episode of the Magic School Bus, which most can be found free on Youtube, teachers can use the website for more ideas to enhance the lesson.  There are games, quizzes, printouts, and experiments that can be done using the website.   http://www.scholastic.com/magicschoolbus/    The website also conveniently has a search bar that allows you to search what you are looking for by theme.  So if you want to teach about earth science you select that and a whole bunch of resources that can be used are listed for you.  The books, movie episode, games, and in class experiments that relate to earth science are all found in just one click.

  1. Alisha,
I used to love this show! I can still remember watching the episode where they taught about friction. To this day, I think of a friction-free surface being similar to ice. This show is fantastic for classroom use because it entertains children. I don't know about you, but I never watched this show to learn anything! Ultimately, however, this is what happened. I watched the show because The Friz is such a great character and the students are funny, too.
Now, onto the website! I didn't know this was still around. I think its great that there are printouts that coincide with episodes. This is great to reinforce to students what they learned about.
I also like that this website has a search bar. This makes it much easier to find what you're looking for. Otherwise, we end up aimlessly searching websites until we find what we're looking for. That could take days!
I really like the website you shared and I'm sure I'll use it in the future!

  2. So, I love the fact that in about two clicks I already found out why wetland areas are important. Haha, now i can answer that hypothetical question that Michelle keeps bringing up. Honestly though, this site is awesome. I think one of the best things about it is the ideas for hands on activities to back up your lessons. After a few projects, i'm probably going to run out of ideas and my future students would end up suffering from the lack of excitement. However, with this site to help, I'm pretty sure i will never run out of activites. Great find!

You are absolutly right though, this is a great way to engage your students, I know I was completely engages everytime a teacher would play this show. The shows are so informational and fun at the same time, which is what you need for students especially at the elementary level! I never knew about the website, but I am so glad that all of this is still around and easy to find/use! Thank you for the information and insight!! =)
